MUSEUM & GALLERY EXHIBITS
HISTORY PRESERVED. STORIES RETOLD.
Assemblage Art offers a distinctive way to explore the past - bringing together authentic objects, photographs, printed material and memorabilia to tell stories of a particular time, place, person or event.
Many Saville & Brett works have their origins in history and nostalgia. Familiar objects that might otherwise remain stored away or forgotten are carefully brought together, giving them new context and allowing their individual stories to become part of a larger narrative.

HISTORY THROUGH OBJECTS
Works such as Montreal Olympics 1976 and Montreal EXPO 67 bring together original memorabilia associated with two defining moments in Montreal's history.
Rather than simply displaying individual artifacts, Assemblage Art creates a visual narrative - inviting viewers to discover details, recognize familiar objects and make connections of their own.

It is often these personal connections that give the work another dimension. An object, photograph
or familiar image can unexpectedly bring back memories of a viewer's own life - or stories
remembered from parents and grandparents.
In this way, a piece created around a shared history can become surprisingly personal to the person
standing in front of it.
A PERSONAL PIECE OF EXPO 67
![]() | ![]() Visitors to EXPO 67 will remember the popular souvenir passports, stamped at each pavilion they visited. This one is different. Its original owner handmade their own passport in 1967, carefully creating a very personal record of their visit. Preserved by the family for almost sixty years, it recently resurfaced at the Lachute Flea Market, most likely following an estate sale. A simple handmade object that carries both the story of EXPO 67 and the memory of the person who was there. | ![]() | ![]() |

MORE THAN HISTORY - PERSONAL MEMORIES
This vintage St John Ambulance training bandage has been kept personally for more than 50 years.
Today, its familiar illustrations and signs of age recall not simply an earlier approach to first aid, but a
particular time and the memories associated with it.
Other objects can unexpectedly unlock memories of people. A simple safety razor recalls watching a
father in the early 1950s carefully sharpen his razor blade against the inside of a dampened glass jar
- a wartime trick he had learned during his years in the Home Guard.
These are the connections that make familiar objects so powerful. They preserve history, but they
can also awaken memories of our own lives - and of our parents and grandparents.
